Kimi Antonelli reveals Monaco restart fear after shattering Lewis Hamilton record

Kimi Antonelli has revealed how he wished the Monaco Grand Prix would not restart following the late red-flag for the track breaking up.

Holding a 20s lead, with just 10 laps to go, the race was suspended, wiping that out, potentially costing Antonelli a dominant win.

However, he saw out the restart and defeated Lewis Hamilton into second place, as  Antonelli became the youngest driver to record a grand chelem, and the youngest winner in the history of the race.

At 19 years old, Antonelli has shattered Hamilton's record of youngest-winner in the Principality by four years, with the then-McLaren driver 23 years old in 2008.

He now leads the drivers' championship by 66 points from Hamilton, and 68 from team-mate George Russell, who had a dreadful afternoon and finished 13th following a pit-lane speeding penalty and a drive-through for not serving that correctly.

Reflecting on the looming restart following the red flag for the track breaking up, Antonelli revealed how he was not relishing the threat of Hamilton at the standing start.

"To be fair, I wasn't super-keen on restarting; I didn't really want to restart, but once the notification came out, I just got my thoughts together and started to focus again," Antonelli said.

"I looked at some data, and tried to refocus on restarting and trying to get the tyres in the right temperature, and once I got away, I knew I was going to make it P1 into the first corner, and from that point, I just enjoyed the last few laps.

"It was an incredible weekend and an incredible race, and it was one of those days where it was all coming so natural, and the car was incredible, and it was giving me the confidence to push.
