F1, IndyCar, NASCAR all share incredible joint statistic

It is a quirk of the motorsport history books that F1, IndyCar, and NASCAR all share the same ultimate joint statistic. 

This is that the most successful drivers in those series all have seven championships to their name - and in the case of NASCAR, three drivers have won the Cup title seven times apiece! 

There, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt were joined in 2016 by Jimmie Johnson as a septuple-time champion, but Johnson couldn't eclipse Petty or Earnhardt and win an eighth crown. 

In F1, this is a possibility with Lewis Hamilton equal at the top with Michael Schumacher, the two having won 14 of the 32 titles on offer between Schumacher's first in 1994 and Hamilton's last, to date, in 2000. 

In IndyCar, A.J Foyt won seven titles, one more than Scott Dixon. 

Elsewhere, in MotoGP Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez both have seven premier class titles to their names, as does Ricky Carmichael, with John Surtees' MotoGP exploits bringing him seven titles in total, four of which were in the premier class.

Championships with more than seven-time champions

But there are eight, and even, nine time champions across motorsport.

Mike Hailwood is a nine-time motorcycling champion across all classes, with Rossi and Marquez joining him at that level once their junior titles are added to the mix. 

Elsewhere, the World Rally Championship was won by a French bloke called Sébastien every year between 2004 and 2018, with Loeb and Ogier splitting them 9-7. 

Ogier would add two more titles to draw level with his namesake, doing so in 2025. 

Giacomo Agostini and Johan Johan Kristoffersson are eight-timers in MotoGP, and World Rallycross, respectively.
