Max Verstappen enters this weekend's São Paulo Grand Prix 36 points behind Lando Norris in the F1 drivers' title.

The Interlagos circuit is one where Verstappen has delivered some mesmeric performances in the past, as recently as last season when he claimed a stunning victory from 17th on the grid.

Verstappen has been on a relentless charge in the title fight since Red Bull introduced its new floor in Monza, an event the Dutchman entered 104 points adrift of Oscar Piastri.

While it is now Norris who leads the championship by a point, Verstappen has placed himself firmly in contention of a record-equalling fifth consecutive title.

Three wins in the last five races has brought the 28-year-old into genuine contention, while McLaren has helped the Red Bull driver with its own issues.

However, with just a point separating Norris and Piastri, Verstappen finds himself in a precarious position this weekend.

If Verstappen finishes behind either McLaren driver, his deficit in the drivers' title will increase. The only way for him to reduce his disadvantage is by beating both Norris and Piastri.

While finishing ahead of one McLaren driver will reduce his deficit on that driver, he will still fall further behind in the title fight.

It raises a crucial question: does Verstappen need to beat both McLarens this weekend to remain in the title fight?
