Hamilton's excitement builds: It's been a good day

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has declared himself happy with the way his first day of practice unfolded at his home event. The British driver finishing second overall, behind the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz and ahead of 2021 rival Max Verstappen.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton finished second quickest overall at the end of the first day of running at his home race, the British Grand Prix, after the Brackley-based squad arrived for round 10 with some significant upgrades on his W13. Friday's opening hour was hindered by wet weather, meaning running was at a minimum. However, Hamilton was happy that he managed to get 10 laps on the board, the most of any driver for the session, before going into P2 on a dry track. Speaking after the second session concluded, the British driver explained that wet weather is simply a part of the British Grand Prix, and declared himself happy with how the day ended.

Hamilton: It has been a good day

"It has been a good day. I wish we had more running in FP1 but that beautiful weather we normally get here is what makes it so special, because it can be raining on one corner or half the track and dry everywhere else," he said. "It was just wet through [Turns] 6 and 7 and a little bit down to [Turn] 9 and then it was dry everywhere else. So that made it difficult you couldn’t stay on the Inter[mediates] because they will get destroyed and it's too wet to go on slicks. "But we got some good running still I still got like 10 laps which I was really happy with, I don't think too many people got that."

We've still got work to do, Hamilton admits

However, Hamilton's Mercedes car was still seen to be bouncing as he lapped the track. But the seven-time World Champion has put that down to the car’s behaviour overall and not the porpoising that has been seen in so many races this season. "I think it's bouncing still quite a bit, not in the straight necessarily but through the corners it’s pretty harsh. Not physically harsh, but just like in the car, on the tyres and everything," he explained. "So, we've still got work to do, but it feels like a small step forward. We're just going to have to keep working."
