Max Verstappen is set to make his debut in the Nürburgring 24 Hours over the next few days, but what can the four-time Formula 1 champion expect when it comes to the weather?
During qualifying, which takes place on Thursday and Friday, drivers must be prepared for changeable conditions and occasional heavy showers. It will also be noticeably cold in the area, with temperatures failing to reach double figures.
Even when it is dry, it will only be eight or nine degrees Celsius, but when a shower passes through, the temperature will again drop, and those showers could be quite intense, with a chance of thunderstorms and hail.
It appears likely that most of the showers will fall on Thursday, although Friday is not set to stay dry throughout.
On Thursday, in particular, there will also be a fair bit of wind from westerly directions. On Friday, it will be less prominent.
The nights will also be bitterly cold. During the night leading into Friday, temperatures are set to drop to just below freezing, which, even for the area, is quite remarkable for mid-May.
The race at the Nürburgring starts at 3 pm local time on Saturday [2 pm BST], with conditions set to change.
On Saturday afternoon, during the first few hours, the odd shower cannot be ruled out, but the chances of it staying dry are much higher. It will continue to remain chilly, with temperatures no higher than nine degrees. The usual temperature for this time of the year is 17 degrees.
The one advantage is that the sun will come out on Saturday afternoon, and the evening and night will also be fairly clear. However, this will again result in a noticeably cold night with minimum temperatures barely above freezing.
So for the night owls around the circuit, it’s time to get the winter coat out of the wardrobe again.
On Sunday morning, it will remain chilly for quite some time, but dry. In the afternoon, too, during the final hours of the race, no rain is forecast, and the sun will shine brightly.
The temperature will at least rise slightly more than on previous days. Around 3 pm, at the finish, it will be about 12 degrees. But that still makes it a fair bit cooler than usual.
