Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert believes Lewis Hamilton still has "what it takes" to become an unprecedented eight-time champion.

Hamilton has not been in title contention since the current regulations were introduced in 2022, however, he is joining a competitive Ferrari team next season alongside Charles Leclerc.

Except for four victories over the past three seasons - three of which were this year - Mercedes has struggled to understand the current regulations and finds itself fourth in the pecking order.

In contrast, Ferrari is on an upward trajectory and is expected to be in the title fight next year.

In addition, the Maranello-based team has been backed for a strong start to the new power unit regulations in 2026.

On paper, the seven-time F1 champion looks set to have a car capable of fighting for the crown at Ferrari, with the bigger question being if he can still perform at such a high level.

Herbert is confident the 39-year-old can do so and believes he will thrive at Ferrari.

“Lewis will be looking to fly out of the blocks as quickly, and as positively as he can," Herbert told Vision4Sport. "Has he still got what it takes? I think he has.

“For Lewis, it will be something fresh. His relationship with Fred Vasseur will be positive and benefit the team. He really respects him.

"Then there is Charles to deal with at the same time which will really motivate him. It is all about motivation for the driver.

“It should be a really good start for Ferrari because of the position they are in at the moment.

"They’ve got to tweak a couple of things to ensure overall consistency but the car has the pace to win races as Charles has proven.”
