Max Verstappen provides inside scoop on Red Bull F1 contract talks

Max Verstappen has revealed he was "never really stressed" about his recent contract negotiations, with the Dutchman ultimately extending his stay at Red Bull until the end of 2030.

The four-time F1 drivers' champion's new deal puts to rest months of speculation that he might leave the Milton Keynes-based team for a new challenge within the paddock, with McLaren the most likely alternative after Mercedes' interest cooled this year.

Despite already being contracted to the six-time F1 constructors' champions until the conclusion of the 2028 season, there was the possibility that Verstappen would trigger an exit clause in his contract to cut his tenure short.

However, just before his final home grand prix at Zandvoort, the Dutch driver put pen to paper. Shortly after signing on the dotted line, he shared some details about the process, alongside Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies.

"The talks have been very good, between Oliver [Mintzlaff, Red Bull GmbH managing director], of course, with Laurent, the shareholders," Verstappen told media, including RacingNews365. 

"When you have been working together for a long time, you know each other quite well.

"That's why there was also no immediate rush, and that's why I also never really had anything to say, because just step by step we were getting closer."

Nothing for Verstappen to be worried about

With near-constant questioning from the media about his future over most of the campaign, Verstappen eventually grew tired of being persistently pressed, especially when the intensity ramped up over the summer amid his camp's discussions with McLaren.

The 28-year-old bluntly explained that when he had news to share, he would, indeed, share it. Whilst reflecting on the episode, he pointed out that he merely had nothing to add at the time.

"And for me, I was never really stressed about it," the 71-time grand prix winner added. "So that's why, for me, those questions before... I say what I want to say. Otherwise, I don't say anything. So it doesn't really change anything.

"But at least for the team, now we can just focus ahead, on the years, and we can just keep pushing together."
