Seven-time F1 race winner René Arnoux has warned George Russell that his future is "in the balance" should he fail to become world champion in 2026, with Mercedes set to re-evaluate its rules of engagement.

Russell was the overwhelming favourite for the drivers' title going into the season but has failed to live up to early expectations, with Kimi Antonelli taking the paddock by surprise.

The 19-year-old has grown in confidence rapidly and had put together a five-race winning streak before retiring last time out in Barcelona. Nevertheless, he sits 41 points clear of Lewis Hamilton and 50 ahead of Russell.

At the start of the year, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff outlined his intention to let his drivers race; however, Hamilton is causing a headache for the Silver Arrows.

The Mercedes duo battling in Barcelona allowed Hamilton to escape, with Wolff revealing that the team would speak to the drivers and re-evaluate its rules on racing each other.

Arnoux is unsure how the Silver Arrows could implement such changes already, given that just seven rounds have been completed.

"It's early, we're not even halfway through the championship," Arnoux told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"In Barcelona, George Russell was faster than Kimi Antonelli in free practice and qualifying. The team couldn't ask him to move. The Briton's situation, however, is complicated..."

Russell needing the world title

Since Russell moved to Mercedes from Williams in 2022, everything has been geared towards being ready to fight for the title under the new power unit regulations.

Antonelli, despite being just 19 and in only his second campaign, is threatening to spoil the King's Lynn-born driver's ambitions, with Arnoux insisting Russell's future is at risk if he is not world champion at the end of the year.

Asked to elaborate on what he meant, Arnoux explained: "Everything is at stake; if he [Russell] were to lose the world championship, his future would be in the balance.

"The Italian, on the other hand, can race with more confidence. He's only 19 and has competed in 31 races in his career, so the expectations are completely different.

"Kimi is loved by the team and by Wolff, and I think he has a good chance of winning the title. Mercedes, however, must be careful; there have been too many incidents between teammates in the past."
