George Russell has used the Mona Lisa painting in a detailed breakdown of his struggles to adapt to the fresh demands of the 2026 F1 cars.

Despite winning the season-opening Australian GP and then round eight in Austria, Russell has not been able to keep pace with team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who recorded five straight wins between China and Monaco to open up a huge points lead, which stood at 68 following the Monte Carlo win.

Since then, aided by Antonelli's reliability issues in Barcelona and at Silverstone costing him points, Russell has whittled that deficit down to just 25 points, but was comprehensively out-performed by Antonelli at Silverstone - with the Italian losing a likely victory in the process.

Speaking at length about the ongoing struggles he has in adapting, Russell painted a picture, and made use of the world's most famous painting in the process.

"It is so clear in the data, and it can be solved, whereas I've seen in the past from other drivers or previous team-mates where if you are off the pace, you are scratching your head to understand why," Russell began to media, including RacingNews365.

"I know exactly why that if I don't win or not on pole, it is clear in the data why and what I need to do to improve, so it is not a case of suddenly forgetting how to drive one day and I remember the next.

"It is just not getting the car in the sweet spot, and last year, I felt I had a very high hit rate of how often I could get the full potential from the car, the setup, and the tyres, and this year, that hit rate is far lower."

When then asked why if the problems were so obvious in the data why he could not implement fixes, Russell offered a comparison to the iconic Leonardo da Vinci painting.

"It is like if somebody asked you to draw the Mona Lisa, and you've got the Mona Lisa next to you," he said.

"Do you think you could achieve it straight away? Maybe with practice you will, and with these new power units, these new tyres and cars, I'm having to set the car up in a way that is not suited to my driving style, I am having to drive in a way I haven't for my whole career, and having to adapt to it.

"I know what I need to do, but going out and achieving it when I've driven for 20 years in a certain way, and it has been working for 20 years, and suddenly it is working 50% of the time, and trying to recognise: 'Okay, is my normal way going to work this weekend, or do I need to adapt my approach?'

"'If I do need to adapt my approach, how do I do that, and how do I do it and be quick?', because when I've performed at my very best, I've been performing subconsciously, and not even thinking about driving, and now you're having to think about trying to make these new techniques subconscious, and that is the challenge."
