George Russell discloses method used to overcome Max Verstappen rumours

George Russell was forced to navigate much of the F1 season with uncertainty lingering over his F1 future.

George Russell has revealed he navigated the persistent rumours that his Mercedes F1 drive was under threat by ensuring he took the “next step” on track this year.

Max Verstappen was heavily linked with a move to Mercedes for 2026 amid a slump in form for Red Bull.

However, the four-time champion declared before the summer break that he would be staying put, before Russell's position at Mercedes was consolidated earlier this month.

Russell has enjoyed a positive campaign with Mercedes, his fourth with the Brackley-based squad. He has sealed two grand prix wins and is aiding the team's push to finish second in the constructors' championship.

When asked by media including RacingNews365 how he has upped his game this year in light of the uncertainty over his future, Russell highlighted that confidence was the biggest factor.

“You're just looking for those smallest of margins to take your level to the next step,” he said.

“There isn't one particular thing that has been the difference.

"It's a contribution of confidence with my own ability, confidence with the car beneath me, confidence with my group of engineers who are the ones who directly impact my own performance.”

Russell was questioned at most grands prix over his future, a subject that has become quieter since signing the extension.

The 27-year-old asserted he did not let the speculation take hold of him as he pledged to put all his focus on the on-track results.

"Psychologically as well, I've got a very good group of people around me, away from the track, that help me to be in the right place when I come to the circuit, he said.

“This external noise, to be honest, is only noise on a Thursday, and for me, it was in one ear, out the other and moving forward."
