Gabriel Bortoleto will start his home grand prix in São Paulo from last on the grid after failing to take part in qualifying following his high-speed crash during the sprint race.
Bortoleto was chasing Williams driver Alex Albon in the closing stages of the event, but spun entering the first corner, destroying his Sauber in a crash recorded at a horrifying 57g.
The team soon confirmed Bortoleto was uninjured as focus turned to repairing the car in time for qualifying.
With a new chassis required - with teams allowed to run two chassis on the same day under sprint weekend regulations - the extensive nature of the repairs meant the Sauber mechanics were unable to get it ready in time for the grid-setting session.
Not even a five-minute delay, due to barrier repairs at Turns 10 and 11 following an incident in the support Porsche Cup race, was enough to aid Sauber and Bortoleto's cause.
It guarantees that Bortoleto will start Sunday's race, his first grand prix on home soil, from 20th.
