Fred Vasseur has dampened claims Ferrari could launch a challenge for the world championship after its surprise success in the British Grand Prix.

The Scuderia secured first and third at Silverstone with Charles Leclerc claiming victory and Lewis Hamilton third on a weekend the team did not expect to challenge Mercedes for the win.

Leclerc's victory was aided by a wheel shield failure for Kimi Antonelli that destroyed the handling of his Mercedes as the Italian closed in with 10-lap fresher tyres in the closing stages, with Mercedes suffering from a spate of reliability concerns in recent races.

Antonelli also did not score in Barcelona following a power unit issue, with George Russell also dropping out from a likely win in Canada with another power unit-related failure.

After the Silverstone race, Hamilton is now just 32 points behind Antonelli in the standings, with Leclerc a further 39 behind, but clear of Lando Norris in fifth.

In the constructors' championship, Ferrari is 78 points behind Mercedes, but despite the strong performance at Silverstone, Vasseur was not getting carried away with talk of a title challenge from the Scuderia.

"The championship fight should be your words," Vasseur began his reply when asked by media, including RacingNews365, if the team could sustain its momentum and challenge Mercedes for the titles.

"After Barcelona, we had the comments that 'Ferrari is back in the championship' and after [Austria], we had the comments that 'Ferrari is nowhere.'

"We have exactly the same approach with everybody at home, that is to say: 'Guys, we had this weekend, and now let's focus on Spa.'

"We are not nowhere, we are improving step-by-step, but I never try to draw a conclusion after one race, two races, that it is a good result or a bad result.

"I am just focused on trying to do more, and being better, and I think it is true for me, it is true for everybody at the factory, and then it is your job to speak about the championship."
