Franco Colapinto triggered a second red flag at the death of the opening part of qualifying at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
The Alpine driver made a costly error at Tamburello, before a heavy impact with the wall on the outside of Turn 4.
He caught the grass on the exit of Turn 3 which saw the Argentine lose control, resulting in contact with the barrier, causing significant damage to his car.
It marked his third major crash in his last five grands prix, having also crashed heavily in São Paulo qualifying and the race last year, as well as a crash in Las Vegas qualifying.
In addition to the crash, Colapinto has been summoned to the stewards for an incident prior to his accident.
Alpine released Colapinto too early following the closing seconds of a first red flag period in Q1 after Yuki Tsunoda suffered a terrifying crash which saw his Red Bull barrel roll.
