Tokyo will hold its first Formula E race in 2024 after the championship announced its provisional calendar for the 2023/24 season.
It will be the 10th year of the World Championship and will feature 17 races across 13 venues, including the Japanese race on the 30th March.
Formula E has been working with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to bring the race to support their Zero Emission Vehicle initiative, part of the 'Zero Emission Tokyo' strategy. The city also plans to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
The race will be held in Tokyo’s bay area, according to the Governor of Tokyo Yuriko Koike.
“This race will be held around Tokyo Big Sight in Tokyo’s bay area, where developments are underway to become a sustainable next generation city," said Koike.
It is the first time an FIA championship race has been held in Tokyo, with Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds calling it the "highlight" of the calendar.
“Tokyo will be a highlight of our historic tenth season," he said.
"We are also in advanced discussions with many more iconic world cities who are keen to host a Formula E race and create blockbuster world championship motorsport events with us."
Hyderabad and Cape Town are currently both new locations that have yet to be added to the schedule. Pre-season testing will commence in Valencia on 23rd October.
