Mercedes overtake Ferrari to become most successful F1 manufacturer of all-time

Mercedes has become the most successful F1 engine manufacturer in terms of race wins, ending Ferrari's 22-year reign. 

George Russell's victory in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was the 252nd for a Mercedes engine in grand prix racing, passing the 251 benchmark Ferrari had set with Charles Leclerc's victory at the British GP earlier this year.

The first driver to win with a Mercedes engine was Juan Manuel Fangio at the 1954 French GP, on Mercedes-Benz's grand prix debut, with the team going onto claim nine grand prix wins before withdrawing after 1955 in the wake of the Le Mans disaster.

Mercedes power would not return to F1 until the late 1990s, with David Coulthard claiming Mercedes' 10th victory at the 1997 Australian GP in the back of a McLaren. By this time, Ferrari had 108 wins, although it had experienced a lean period in the early and mid-1990s.

By the time of the 2004 British Grand Prix, the team moved ahead of Ford Cosworth with its 180th victory, courtesy of Michael Schumacher. 

Over the course of the last 22 seasons, Ferrari extended its record to 251, with Mercedes on 99 by the time of the adoption of the turbo hybrid era in 2014. 

This means since the start of 2014, Mercedes power has won 153 grands prix, compared to 29 for Ferrari. 

The wins of Mercedes power is split between the Mercedes works team, McLaren, Brawn GP, and Racing Point, whilst Ferrari has won 250 of the 251 grands prix won by Ferrari engines.

Sebastian Vettel remains the only driver to ever win a grand prix using a Ferrari engine not in a Ferrari chassis, doing so when he won the 2008 Italian Grand Prix for Toro Rosso, using a customer Ferrari engine.
