George Russell assigns 'most dominant' verdict as F1 title hopes reignited

George Russell has stated his display at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix marked the “most dominant” weekend he has enjoyed in his career.

Russell took pole position by a mammoth eight-tenths of a second, the biggest margin seen in F1 since the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix.

He went on to lead every lap of the race to win it with the fastest lap in hand, despite some late pressure from Max Verstappen, who was seeking his first trip to the top step of the podium this year.

However, Russell went on to narrow the gap in the standings to Kimi Antonelli to 66 points, with the latter crossing the line in fifth in a recovery drive after crashing in qualifying.

Having struggled for form of late, Russell stated his outing in Baku marked his strongest showing yet in F1.

“It’s my first Grand Slam in Formula 1 and, for sure, the most dominant weekend I’ve had in my career,” Russell told media including RacingNews365.

“So that has come at a really great moment.”

'Easy to lose faith in the season'

Prior to the Baku weekend, Russell was sitting 81 points down on Antonelli in the standings, with his championship hopes rapidly fading.

However, with a boost in confidence now under his belt, Russell will be hoping to continue to eat into the deficit in the coming rounds.

“Also to achieve it on a circuit that requires so much commitment and confidence, I’m really proud of,” he said.

“I think it would have been very easy for me to lose the faith this season.

“Not necessarily about winning the championship, but in terms of my ability, and that never happened.”
