Ford has confirmed talks with Max Verstappen about a potential future appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with those conversations stretching back more than three years.
Mark Rushbrook, Ford's global director of racing, revealed the discussions ahead of Saturday's 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, confirming the American manufacturer's interest in securing the four-time F1 drivers' champion for its endurance racing programme.
"I would love to see that, yes," Rushbrook told reporters when asked about Verstappen driving for Ford at Le Mans. "But a lot of things need to align for that to happen. Of course, that would be incredible for us, for the sport."
The Dutchman has expressed growing interest in sports car racing, including forming his own team and making his debut at the 24-hour Nürburgring race next weekend. Verstappen has previously stated his desire to compete at Le Mans and challenge for overall victory.
Ford's return to the World Endurance Championship's premier Hypercar category in 2027 with a two-car entry could provide the opportunity, through the manufacturer's existing partnership with Red Bull, as part of its F1 power unit programme.
Rushbrook ruled out 2027 for Verstappen's potential Le Mans debut but suggested it could happen whilst he remains active in F1, "depending on the schedules and what's going on."
The Ford executive confirmed talks began when the Red Bull partnership was first announced, describing them as "looking for the right opportunity for things to align."
When asked about Verstappen's reaction, Rushbrook indicated the 28-year-old showed interest "with the right programme, yeah."
Verstappen remains under contract with Red Bull through 2028, though he has previously questioned his long-term F1 future.
Fernando Alonso was the last active F1 driver to race at Le Mans in 2018, winning for Toyota. Prior to that, Nico Hulkenberg won outright with Porsche three years prior.
