Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has opened up on what is needed for Lewis Hamilton to make steps forward at the team next year.

The seven-time champion joined Ferrari this year as he ended a highly successful stint at Mercedes.

However, it was a difficult campaign for the 40-year-old, who endured the first podium-less season of his career.

He was consistently unable to match the pace of team-mate Charles Leclerc and labelled it the most difficult campaign he has experienced in F1.

Vasseur highlighted there is responsibility on the shoulders of both Ferrari and Hamilton to extract pace from the car.

“I think it has to come from everywhere," Vasseur told select media including RacingNews365

“I think that the mindset of the team and the mindset of the driver has to be 'let's try to do a better job everywhere'.

“It's not that you have something which is going well and the rest is going wrong.

“At the end of the day, we have to improve. We have to improve into the collaboration with Lewis. We have to improve on the team.

“He has to improve perhaps on how he gets the best from the car that he has.”

Vasseur added there is no single element that will unlock an upturn in pace, but rather several small issues that must be rectified.

“I know what you have in mind, the brakes, for example. He spent 20 years with one supplier, they changed this season,” he said.

“It's not that when you are three-tenths behind someone, it's not that they have the magic bullet or they have the component in the car with three-tenths faster.

“Quite often, it's that you have 10 topics where you are three hundredths of a second slower. One after one, we have to tackle each point.”
