Carlos Sainz accuses Fernando Alonso of getting him Madring penalty

Carlos Sainz feels that Fernando Alonso's indignation over team radio earned him his five-second time penalty after the compatriots clashed at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Approaching the hazardous Turn 5-6 chicane on Lap 12 at the Madring, Alonso was attacking Sainz on the outside in the battle for P17 when the Williams moved across, initiating contact between the pair.

The Aston Martin driver immediately vented his frustration, saying "He squeezed me into the wall" after sustaining damage to his front wing.

Sainz, however, felt Alonso had made more out of it than needed, suggesting it was the two-time F1 drivers' champion's radio communications that had swayed race control and the stewards into punishing him.

"Nothing to say, really," the Williams driver told media, including RacingNews365. "It's the nature of that corner when you turn right, and I think he complained on the radio, so he managed to get me a penalty.

"Like always, the nature of that corner is always going to lead to these kinds of crashes because there's only space for one; there's not even space for two.

"And you cannot keep looking in your mirror while you're turning and looking and doing a right-left because you need to look forward.

"So at one point you need to focus on your own driving line, and yeah, I don't think Fernando was alongside me or anything."

Alonso: Sainz incident was 'unnecessary'

Alonso, however, was satisfied with the decision after what he deemed to be an "unnecessary" collision in front of their shared home fans.

"He had a penalty, so if they [the stewards] consider that enough, it's good for me," he added when told that Sainz had played it down.

"We didn't finish any of the two in the points, but I think that was unnecessary.

"There was plenty of room on the left. I was just on the wall on the right, 340 kph; I think it was not needed."
