Fernando Alonso shares 'magical' Aston Martin turnaround verdict

Fernando Alonso has dismissed the notion that Aston Martin will "magically" be competitive at this weekend's São Paulo Grand Prix, following a difficult campaign thus far.

The Silverstone-based squad sits seventh in the F1 constructors' standings, just three points behind Racing Bulls.

However, having claimed successive fifth-place finishes in the standings over the previous two seasons, it represents a clear backwards step.

Alonso joined Aston Martin for 2023, putting together a string of six podiums in his opening eight rounds for the team.

Only two more have followed, both towards the end of that season; the last of which came during the trip to Brazil two years ago.

So when it was put to him that Interlagos could offer fertile soil for an Aston Martin renaissance, the 44-year-old quashed the idea.

Speaking to media, including RacingNews365, Alonso replied: "We've not been super competitive in the last few months. So I don't think that magically we will be competitive now in Brazil.

"But we're still always in the fight for points, I think that will be the maximum goal. I don't think that the top four teams will have any problems here.

"So, realistically, the only positions available are ninth and tenth. Let's see if we are in that fight."

Nonetheless, Aston Martin's weekend started in strong fashion as Alonso and team-mate Lance Stroll ended sprint qualifying in fifth and seventh, respectively.

Happy hunting ground

Brazil has been a happy hunting ground for the 32-time grand prix winner, with the venue the home to the two high points of his F1 career.

Whilst he endured heartbreak at Interlagos in 2012, it is also the scene of his two F1 drivers' championship victories, in 2005 and 2006.

"It always feels special to be back, and [it] has always been very good in terms of results," the Spanish driver reflected.

"Nine times on the podium, I think, which is the circuit that has been the best for me.

"And, of course, the two championships here, always great memories. Let's try to enjoy one more weekend."
