Fernando Alonso points to bad luck 'trend' after Baku frustration

Fernando Alonso has pointed to the continuous bad luck he has experienced when in a competitive position this season, detailing it as a "trend" Aston Martin must accept.

The Spaniard endured a disappointing Azerbaijan Grand Prix which saw the British outfit struggle to compete with the lead midfield outfits. 

Alonso qualified in 11th but tumbled to 15th during the race, while Lance Stroll finished in 17th.

Aston Martin struggled for pace at the Baku City Circuit, and were largely uncompetitive, unlike in Monza where Alonso suffered a sudden suspension failure when set for big points.

No reliability failures were experienced in Azerbaijan, although as highlighted by Alonso, nothing for happened for Aston Martin.

"Sure, like always, we have the worst car and nothing happened, no safety car, no yellow flags, no reliability problems," Alonso told select media, including RacingNews365. 

"It only happens when we are at the front. This is the trend of this this year, and we have to take it.

Luck has not been on Alonso's side this season, who has had something go against him on several occasions. 

The 43-year-old suffered a brake fire in China, an engine failure when in sixth in Monaco and a suspension failure in Monza when set for good points.

Monza was Aston Martin's strongest performance of the season, despite the result, although came as a big surprise to the Silverstone squad.

"Monza, I think it was a very strange weekend in terms of performance," added Alonso. "We believed in Monza we had the last car, and I qualified in Q3. 

"We believed in the race that we had the last car and we were fighting for points. But that's the anomaly, here [in Baku] we hoped to have the last car, and this is the last car. 

"Performances like Monza happen once in a while."
