Fernando Alonso has stated the current generation of F1 car is the “worst” he has ever driven around Monaco.
The two-time champion endured a difficult outing on Friday during practice, ending the second session in 20th place, over two seconds down on the fastest lap of the day.
The Aston Martin car looked highly challenging to drive throughout the day, with Alonso's team-mate Lance Stroll logging the slowest lap of all at the end of FP2 - behind newcomers Cadillac.
Explaining the extent of the team's problems, Alonso suggested the team is at a loss to implement a short-term fix.
“On the grip, we are not happy with the front axle,” he said. “We are losing a lot of front grip in the middle of the corners.
“It seems that we have this chronic understeer that we can't solve. We did a couple of setup changes, we will do more tonight, and hopefully we will improve the situation.
“But at the moment it is a challenging topic. The upshifts, downshifts, harvesting level into the corner in Monaco, it's crucial to be precise and confident into the corners.
“At the moment is way too inconsistent, the way the car downshifts and the speed you approach the corner. It is not easy to drive.”
This year, the F1 cars have been made lighter and shorter and with the removal of 'Straight Mode' in Monaco, drivers will have more pure downforce around the lap to push through the corners.
However, for Alonso, it is doing little to improve his experience behind the wheel.
When asked if Monaco is the best track to drive the new F1 cars, Alonso retorted: “I don't think so.
“This is probably the worst generation of cars I ever drove in Monaco.”
