Fernando Alonso future causes division as Alpine rumours lurk

Eight years of Fernando Alonso's F1 career have been spent at Enstone, is that where he should retire from the sport?

The prospect of Fernando Alonso making a sensational return to Alpine for 2027 has divided RacingNews365 readers almost right down the middle.

In our latest poll, 40.1 per cent of fans believe the two-time world champion should rejoin the Enstone-based outfit, while 38.8 per cent think he is better off staying at Aston Martin.

A further 21.1 per cent would prefer to see the 44-year-old call time on his extraordinary career at the end of 2026.

The rumours linking Alonso with Alpine have gathered pace in recent weeks, fuelled by his current contract with Aston Martin expiring at the end of this season and his long-standing relationship with team executive Flavio Briatore.

Alpine's encouraging fifth place in the Constructors' Championship, with 57 points after seven rounds, only adds to the intrigue.

By contrast, Aston Martin's 2026 campaign has been dismal. Alonso sits 18th in the standings with a solitary point, scored with a 10th-place finish in Monaco, hardly the platform Adrian Newey's operation promised when it lured the legendary designer to Silverstone.

With no official confirmation from any party, the speculation will rumble on, and so, it seems, will the debate among fans.
