F1 teams facing Baku dilemma as key decision awaits

George Russell will start Sunday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix from pole position after topping qualifying at the Baku City Circuit with a best lap of 1:42.526s.

The Mercedes driver edged out Charles Leclerc, with the Ferrari driver a huge 0.837s adrift in second. Oscar Piastri completed the front two rows in third for McLaren, with Isack Hadjar fourth for Red Bull and Lando Norris rounding out the top five.

Max Verstappen could only manage eighth for Red Bull, behind Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasly.

But the session was overshadowed by a heavy crash for Kimi Antonelli. The Italian clipped the inside barrier at Turn 1 during Q1, an incident that broke his Mercedes' front-left suspension and track rod and left him unable to return to the pits. 

The 20-year-old will line up 16th on the grid.

The strategy picture in Baku

Baku's smooth asphalt and lack of sustained lateral loading typically produce very low tyre wear, and Pirelli has again pointed teams towards a one-stop race as the dominant approach, with the hard compound held in reserve in case of an early safety car. 

Historical data puts the safety car probability around 67 per cent for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, adding an extra layer of uncertainty to any strategy call.

Pirelli has brought its softest compound range to Baku, with the C3 nominated as the hard tyre, the C4 as the medium, and the C5 as the soft. 

Teams have the freedom to start on whatever compound they desire, and most of the front-runners, pole-sitter Russell included, are expected to begin the race on the medium, using it to bridge the early laps before switching to the hard for a long second stint as they target a single stop.

Others further down the order may opt to start on the soft in the hope of an early safety car, which would allow them to make their sole pit stop under caution and jump directly onto the hard tyre for the remainder of the race.

Pirelli motorsport director Dario Marrafuschi outlined the compound picture ahead of the race.

"The data gathered so far confirms that a one-stop strategy remains the most competitive option,” he said. 

“Combinations involving the Medium and Soft compounds appear particularly effective given the limited wear levels observed. The use of the Hard compound in the second stint could become an alternative worth considering should an early neutralisation occur."

With Antonelli starting from deep in the field, Mercedes will be watching closely to see whether a safety car period offers the rookie an early route back through the pack.
