McLaren faces an initial setback in the development race of the new power unit regulations, with it having the smallest allocation of wind tunnel time following its success last year.
The FIA conducts biannual assessments of Formula 1 teams' wind tunnel allocations and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, with permitted testing levels determined by each outfit's position in the constructors' championship.
For the opening half of 2026, allocations have been calculated using the final 2025 constructors' standings.
Champions McLaren receive the most restrictive testing allowance, whilst the bottom-placed team enjoys maximum development opportunities. As a new entrant, Cadillac will receive identical allocation to Alpine, who finished last in 2025.
The baseline allocation of 100 per cent, equating to 320 wind tunnel runs and 2,000 computer simulations, applies to the seventh-placed outfit. Each championship position above or below represents a five per cent adjustment to this standard.
McLaren's championship triumph has reduced its testing allocation to 70 per cent of the baseline figure, permitting just 224 wind tunnel runs and 1,400 computer simulations.
Red Bull, having secured third place in 2025, will be allocated 256 wind tunnel runs alongside 1,600 computer simulations.
The aerodynamic testing restrictions were introduced in 2021 as part of efforts to compress the competitive order throughout the grid. Whilst the new regulations may initially create larger performance disparities, the system is designed to gradually equalise the field over successive seasons.
