Born in Geneva, Switzerland, Grosjean showcased his prodigious talent in junior formula racing. The Frenchman won all 10 rounds of the 2003 Formula Lista Junior series before making the step-up to French Formula Renault in 2004 and winning the championship in 2005. Already signed to the Renault driver development programme, Grosjean progressed into Formula 3 Euro in 2006 and captured the title the following year.

Having signed for ART Grand Prix, Grosjean won the inaugural GP2 Asia Series in 2008 before finishing fourth in the regular GP2 Series of the same year. And the Frenchman would be handed an unexpected F1 debut in 2009 when Nelson Piquet Jr left Renault midway through the season in the wake of the “Crashgate” scandal. A best finish of 13th at the Brazilian Grand Prix wasn’t enough to secure a full-time drive with the French team who instead opted for a line-up of Vitaly Petrov and Robert Kubica.

However, it wouldn’t be long before he returned to the sport. After claiming back-to-back GP2 titles in 2010 and ’11 as well as another GP2 Asia Series crown, Grosjean was hired by the newly formed Lotus F1 team - formerly Renault - to drive alongside Kimi Raikkonen for 2012.

Immediately, the Frenchman made an impact, qualifying third at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. Grosjean would secure the first podium of his career at the Bahrain Grand Prix and scored three in total for the season en route to an eighth-place finish in the final standings. It wasn’t all plain sailing, however, as the Geneva native received criticism from his peers for a series of reckless moves and it reached a crescendo at the 2012 Belgain Grand Prix when he was given a one-race ban for triggering a first-corner pile-up.

It wasn’t the first setback of his career and, just as he had done before, he recovered. In fact, 2013 would prove to be the best year of his F1 career as he achieved six top-three results - which included three in a row - and scored 132 points. A poor design concept in 2014 meant the team struggled but Grosjean would return to the podium for the final time at the 2015 Belgian Grand Prix in what was his last season with Lotus.

Ahead of the 2016 season, Grosjean agreed to join F1 newcomers, Haas. The Frenchman spent five seasons with the American constructor, finishing sixth in the team’s first race and achieving a best result of fourth at the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix. However, it is perhaps his final outing that will live longest in the memory. At the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, Grosjean escaped one of the most horrific crashes in the sport’s history as his car split in two and erupted into flames. Although the Frenchman was lucky to walk away with only burns to his hands, he was forced out of the season’s final two races, meaning that could well prove to be his last act in F1.

Both Grosjean and former Haas teammate Kevin Magnussen were dropped for 2021, with the American team opting for an all-new line-up of Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin.
