Christian Horner suffers shock Red Bull exit after 20 years in charge - On This Day

One of the most dramatic news stories of the modern F1 era occurred one year ago today, when Christian Horner exited the Red Bull team.

It is exactly a year since Red Bull sent shockwaves through the F1 paddock by relieving Christian Horner of his duties as team principal and CEO, ending a two-decade partnership that delivered six constructors' championships and eight drivers' titles.

On 9 July 2025, three days after the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Red Bull GmbH confirmed the decision that had been rumbling beneath the surface for months.

The official team statement was brief but pointed: "After 20 years with the Team, Christian Horner departs Oracle Red Bull Racing as Team Principal and CEO. Thank you for everything Christian, you will forever remain an important part of our team's history."

Horner himself addressed staff at the Milton Keynes factory that same day.

"Yesterday, I was informed by Red Bull that operationally I would no longer be involved with the business or the team moving forward," he told the gathered workforce. "It came as a shock to myself. Watching and being part of this team has been the biggest privilege of my life."

The timing was hardly coincidental. Red Bull sat third in the constructors' championship at the season's midpoint, with just two wins from 12 races. McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri had dominated, while Mercedes had also taken a victory, leaving the once all-conquering operation playing catch-up.

Verstappen had scored zero points in Austria just a week earlier, and political tensions, simmering for 18 months between various camps, had reached a tipping point. Reports of friction with Helmut Marko and a lingering misconduct investigation from 2024 only compounded the pressure from Red Bull's Salzburg headquarters.

Max Verstappen's first reaction came via social media hours after the announcement. "From my first race win, to four World Championships, we have shared incredible successes," the Dutchman wrote. "Thank you for everything, Christian!"

Laurent Mekies, formerly of Racing Bulls, stepped in as Horner's successor, pledging less politics and a return to pure racing.

12 months on, Horner has been linked with several F1 ventures, including a reported interest in Alpine and talks with other outfits, yet no confirmed role has materialised.

He has taken up an advisory position with private equity firm Oakley Capital, but the paddock was buzzing again at this year's British Grand Prix when he appeared at Silverstone as a guest, his first return to the F1 circus since his departure.
