Canadian Grand Prix 2023 The latest F1 news about the 2023 F1 Canadian Grand Prix

The Canadian Grand Prix will take place on 18 June 2023. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will be the venue for the race in Montreal, which will take place for the second time since 2019.

Round eight: A Canadian Classic

Amid all the European races, Formula 1 made a pit stop in Montreal, Canada.

Swimming on Saturday

After a largely rainy Friday in Montreal, the drivers prepared for qualifying on Saturday. A session that started dry, but was soon plagued by heavy rain showers. Various strategic decisions (or: gambles) meant that Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc, among others, stuck in Q2. Alexander Albon made a masterstroke, clocking a quick lap on slicks at the start of Q2. Shortly afterwards, the rain fell heavily, meaning the other drivers didn't come close to the Thai's time.

Also in Q3, there were hard-fought battles. Max Verstappen put his RB19 on pole position, but the most noticeable event was Nico Hülkenberg's lap. The German put his Haas in a handsome second place. Unfortunately for the veteran, he had to start the race from fifth place due to ignoring a red flag in the first part of qualifying. Several drivers received penalties for various reasons.

F1 Canadian Grand Prix 2023

While Friday and Saturday were completely rained out, the sun was shining in Canada on Sunday. The start in Montreal went without a hitch. Max Verstappen led out of turn one, followed by Lewis Hamilton who had a better start than Fernando Alonso. Sergio Perez fought with Carlos Sainz for a position in the midfield. The Mexican came out on top.

Bad luck for Sargeant, reckless Russell

Once all twenty cars were well underway, Williams driver Logan Sargeant had a technical problem. This led to a brief virtual safety car.

George Russell also had a problem, but he had only himself to blame. The Brit lost the rear of his Mercedes car coming out of the chicane in the middle sector of the circuit and hit the wall. Despite a heavily damaged Mercedes, Russell was able to continue the race, thanks to his mechanics. The British driver, however, had to retire later in the race due to a brake problem.

Russell's crash caused the safety car to come onto the track. This was beneficial for some drivers in terms of pit stop timing, less so for others. Among others, Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, and Lewis Hamilton benefited from the yellow flag situation.

2007 flashbacks

After the race restart, Hamilton and Alonso clashed. The two veterans fought hard but fair for second place. It was Alonso who took second place, after a brilliant overtaking move when braking for the last corner combination.

Incredible Albon

Alexander Albon's fairy-tale weekend only got better as the race progressed. The former teammate of Max Verstappen got the most out of his Williams and managed to keep various drivers behind him for several laps. He eventually crossed the finish line in seventh place.

Iconic podium, party for Red Bull

The Canadian Grand Prix was won by Verstappen. Alonso (2) and Hamilton (3) joined the Dutchman on the podium. It was a special moment for Red Bull Racing, who claimed their hundredth victory in Montreal. It was also a special day for Verstappen himself: the two-time world champion achieved his 41st victory and thereby equalled Ayrton Senna.
