Piatsri, who currently leads the drivers' standings, could only manage sixth on the road and faces an uphill task to ensure he walks away from the weekend with an extended lead.
A positive day for Ferrari sees Charles Leclerc in third, while team-mate Lewis Hamilton will start from fifth.
Lance Stroll has been demoted to P19 on the starting grid after picking up a five-place grid penalty following a sprint race clash with Esteban Ocon.
He starts ahead of Isack Hadjar, who failed to register a lap time during qualifying following a crash during Q1.
