Lando Norris secured pole position for the Sprint, pipping Lewis Hamilton in an unpredictable Sprint Shootout in difficult, changing conditions that saw some scary moments in the final part of the session - including a spin for Charles Leclerc and an off for Max Verstappen.
The second part of sprint qualifying was delayed due to the return of skid-block induced fire, this time at Turn 5, as the rain rolled in - to the benefit of Zhou Guanyu and the home crowd.
Prior to that, in SQ1, George Russell had narrowly avoided being knocked out, leaving Yuki Tsunoda as the surprise elimination, going out alongside the two Alpines and the two Williams'.
