F1 World Champion Max Verstappen put down a marker during second practice in Bahrain, which was held in more representative evening conditions.
Verstappen's best time of 1:31.936 put the Red Bull driver 0.087s clear of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, with both drivers using the Soft compound tyre.
Carlos Sainz was third in the other Ferrari, as the lead Mercedes of George Russell and Alpine's Fernando Alonso completed the top five.
Lewis Hamilton struggled en route to ninth, 1.2 seconds adrift of Verstappen.
