Wolff: Hamilton notices that Russell is coming along

Lewis Hamilton's future at Mercedes will be a major talking point this season, with George Russell seemingly waiting in the wings. However Toto Wolff says his his driver lineup is the least of his concerns right now.

Toto Wolff isn't all that concerned about who will be driving for Mercedes in 2022, though he believes Lewis Hamilton is aware that George Russell is waiting in the wings. Both Hamilton and teammate Valtteri Bottas are under contract until the end of the 2021 F1 season. As a result speculation as to who will be driving the Silver Arrows next season will be a major talking point this season. In fact, it already is with many wondering who will succeed Lewis should he leave Mercedes. "That's the first time I've heard of that," Wolff told Austrian outlet oe24.com when asked about rumours that Hamilton isn't on speaking terms with Russell. "My drivers are the least of my concerns at the moment, but I can imagine that the competition between Lewis and George is fierce. The great ones sense when a good one is coming along and George is the next generation." One of the things on Wolff's mind is the challenge presented by Red Bull, with the Milton Keynes outfit looking strong in Bahrain while Mercedes haven't come to grips with the new regulations just yet. "The setback we have had to swallow because of the rule changes, that's just the way it is," Wolff added. "It can't be reversed. Now it's time to figure out what we need to do to be really competitive. We need to understand the car better."
