Toto Wolff has outlined a "risk" he believes F1 teams are facing when it comes to upgrades with their current cars.
Although McLaren has been able to deliver strong upgrades to its MCL38, the other leading teams have all hit development walls this season, with Mercedes' stumbling block being a floor upgrade introduced at the Belgian GP.
This was taken off the car before the race, with the package subsequently dropped.
A fresh package is in the works for the upcoming United States GP at Austin, as Wolff outlined the dilemma facing teams.
"I cannot tell you," Wolff replied when asked by media including RacingNews365 if Mercedes had gone too far with its ultimately abandoned Belgian GP upgrade.
"I heard Zak [Brown] saying that the last upgrade [McLaren] put on the car was in Miami, and the car is going quicker and quicker, so it is consolidating.
"But this is risky too because if the upgrades work for the others, and you're putting two-tenths on the car, two-tenths on the car and a tenth on the car, you're half a second ahead.
"And then consolidating a package that is six months old doesn't work either, that is why many of us are getting it wrong at the moment.
"We need to go over the data, so you're going for a new, new [floor] when the new [floor] didn't work properly, but the old one doesn't either, so it is either old new or new, new."
