Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2023

What race strategies are available for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?

The final race of the season will get underway at the Yas Marina Circuit, but what are the main strategy options available to teams?

The one-stop strategy is likely to be the most popular and fastest strategy during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix according to Pirelli.

Drivers starting on the Medium tyre and switching to the Hard between laps 20 and 26 will be on the quickset strategy according to F1's tyre supplier, with the alternate being to start on the Soft and switch to the Hard between Laps 12 and 18.

An alternate strategy would be to start on the Medium tyre, switch to the Hard between Laps 12 and 18, and to another set of Hards between Laps 33 and 39.

This could also be traded with going longer in the middle stint and extending the Hard tyre until Lap 43, then switching to the Soft for the final laps.

"The decision taken by almost all the teams to save two sets of Hard tyres, demonstrates that the C3 is the favoured compound. On paper, a one-stop is quickest, with the Medium for the first stint before switching to the aforementioned Hard," said Pirelli Director of Motorsport Mario Isola.

"A two-stop race, with the sequence C4/C3/C3, is not that far off in terms of overall race time and could become a valid option especially if there is a neutralisation in the second part of the race.

"It’s hard to see the C5 coming into play, unless someone wants to gamble in the final stages on exploiting the Soft’s grip advantage over a used Hard, with a lighter car."
