What is overtake mode in F1?
In the 2026 F1 season, one of the new tools drivers will have available to them is the 'overtake mode', but what is it, and how does the new system work?
Essentially, 'overtake mode' is the replacement for the DRS, which was abolished at the end of 2025.
It is a performance aid and is designed to boost overtaking possibilities for drivers.
'Overtake mode' allows a driver to recharge an extra 0.5MJ of energy per lap, thus giving them higher speeds.
The system works the same way as DRS in that a driver must be within the detection point of one second behind the car in front to be able to access the additional power, which is only available on the following lap.
If the driver then fails to get past their rival, and drops one second behind through the detection point next time around, like the DRS, they will not have access to the system on the next lap.
