Nico Rosberg won the 2016 Formula 1 world title. The German outsmarted teammate Lewis Hamilton in an intense battle, after which he hung up his helmet. An awkward moment for the now seven-time world champion Hamilton, who would have liked to get revenge against Rosberg in 2017. Ultimately the Brit did not get that chance.
Looking back at Mercedes' results in 2016, one can speak of an extremely dominant year for the German car manufacturer. Of the 21 races that season, no less than 19 were won by Mercedes. Nine times Rosberg ran away with the victory and ten times Hamilton managed to win a race that year.
Over one fast lap, the Mercedes WO7 car impressed even more. In fact, only once in 2016 were the Mercedes drivers unable to put the car on pole. During the Monaco Grand Prix, it was then Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo who managed to set the fastest time during Saturday's qualifying session.
The Mercedes WO7 will go down in history as one of the most successful F1 cars of all time. The car still holds the record for the most GP wins in a season.
