Max Verstappen has stated his willingness to do “everything to win” connects him to drivers like Michael Schumacher.
Verstappen is currently pursuing his fourth consecutive F1 title and is looking to fend off a threat from Lando Norris.
The pair have gone wheel-to-wheel at the last two races and have been involved in fierce battles, resulting in interference from the stewards.
Verstappen's aggressive manoeuvres on Norris in Mexico last weekend were criticised by some, with the Dutchman handed a duo of 10-second time penalties.
When asked if he sees the criticism as a compliment due to drivers such as Schumacher and Ayrton Senna noted for their aggression, Verstappen told Bild: “I don't care about compliments. I want to win, and I always give everything to do that.
"I think that's what connects me with drivers like Michael. He also never left anything untried to have the greatest possible chance of success.
“Both in the car with his driving style and outside when it came to developing the car. There is no room for fear, but you also have to use your common sense.”
Verstappen 'not given hell' by F1 rivals
Verstappen currently has one hand on a fourth consecutive drivers' championship as he holds a 62-point cushion over Norris with 86 on the table from the final three grands prix plus the last sprint.
The duo have recently gone wheel to wheel in contentious circumstances in the United States and Mexico City Grands Prix, which led to the Dutchman's driving standards being questioned.
Verstappen, though, does not see Norris who makes his life uncomfortable on a race track.
Asked as to who he feels is his toughest opponent, Verstappen added: “Lando is a very good driver, but there isn't one big rival who makes my life hell.
“The teams are too close to each other for it to always be a one-on-one battle. Every weekend is different.
“Some cars work better on some tracks than others. It's the same with drivers.”
