Max Verstappen's win in Mexico has seen the Dutchman eclipse a record set by Ayrton Senna during the 1988 season.

Verstappen stormed to his ninth victory of the 2021 season at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, meaning he surpasses Senna for the most wins in a single F1 campaign for a Honda-powered driver.

Senna originally set the record en route to the first of his three world titles back in 1988, at the beginning of the highly successful McLaren-Honda days.

Back in 1988, there were only 16 Grands Prix on the calendar, compared to 22 this year. However, as it stands, the two are equal on percentage terms; Senna won 50 percent of races staged through 1988, with Verstappen triumphing in nine of the 18 races held in 2021 so far.

It was not the only record set by a Red Bull driver on Sunday, as Sergio Perez became the first Mexican to lead a lap and score a podium on home soil.
