'Toyota working on return to Formula 1'

In late 2009, Toyota decided to pull the plug on its Formula 1 project. Now, 15 years later, the Japanese manufacturer is working hard to return to the pinnacle of motorsport.

It is incredibly likely that we will soon see one of the world's biggest car manufacturers return to Formula 1. RacingNews365 understands that Toyota has reached out to Haas about a possible partnership with the F1 team. It would initially be a sponsorship deal, similar to the one that Alfa Romeo had with Sauber, which ended last year. However, Formula.hu reports that, given Toyota's motivation and the successful conversations with Haas, it is likely that the parties will start working together closely before the 2026 project.

Formula.hu also reports that, assumably from 2025 onwards, Toyota could also partner up with Haas in building car parts (in which Dallara would still be included). According to the well-informed Hungarian website, there is now a base for a possible partnership between Haas and Toyota.

The Japanese manufacturer has no immediate plans to supply engines in the near future, but Toyota does want to work together with Haas in the production of the chassis for 2026. Part of this plan would be to use Toyota's wind tunnel, which is located in Cologne and dates back to the previous decade of F1. RacingNews365 recently visited that wind tunnel, which Andretti currently uses as well. They still hope to secure a spot on the F1 grid from 2026 onwards.

Possible technical partnership

By pursuing a technical partnership with the American team, the Japanse manufacturer also hopes to return to F1. Given the possible partnership Toyota has in mind, it cannot be ruled out that they also consider to build their own engine in the near future. That is not the case at the moment, but F1 undoubtedly hopes for a big return of the Japanese manufacturer.

It is undeniable that Toyota's return would be a huge boost for F1 because, in addition to Honda supplying engines, Toyota's return would boost the future of F1 in Japan. That would essentially confirm the global support that F1 is receiving these days. For now, however, Haas and Toyota first have to reach a final agreement to assure that the return of the Japanese manufacturer to F1 will be official. That would also be great news for Haas.

The American team has had an amazing season so far and seems to be ready for the next step. A partnership with Toyota would be the ideal opportunity. If the talks with Toyota end in a partnership, American owner Gene Haas and Japanese team boss Ayao Komatsu are also set to become an interesting duo. The team's performance on track has been outstanding this season, but Haas is also working on making a significant impact off the track.
