The 2022 F1 season may be less than one-third of the way through, but some drivers have already reached their limit of permitted components for the year.

With seven races of the 2022 F1 season gone, several drivers look to be facing grid penalties for excessive component usage.

The list of permitted component usage over the course of a season before a penalty is incurred is as follows:

  • Internal Combustion Engine (ICE): max 3 pieces
  • Turbo Charger (TC): max 3 pieces
  • MGU-H: max 3 pieces
  • MGU-K: max 3 pieces
  • Energy Store (ES): max 2 pieces
  • Control Electronics (CE): max 2 pieces
  • Exhaust (EX): max 8 pieces

Alonso already taken penalty, Gasly and Tsunoda close

Fernando Alonso has used the most components of any driver so far, with the Spaniard already having breached the limit for engine, turbo, MGU-H, MGU-K, energy store and control electronics.

Alonso's excessive component usage meant he started last month's Spanish Grand Prix from the back of the grid.

AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda may also be looking nervously at the prospect of a grid penalty, with both drivers already on their third engine, turbo, MGU-H and MGU-K of 2022.

Elsewhere, Alfa Romeo's reliability struggles mean Valtteri Bottas has already used his third turbo and MGU-H of the campaign.

By contrast, despite suffering two mechanical retirements so far in 2022, championship leader Max Verstappen has changed only one exhaust over the season's first seven races, while McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo is the only driver still using all the components he started with in Bahrain.
