The F1 data that shows all is to play for in Abu Dhabi

The final race of the F1 season is almost upon us - who will prevail in the fight at the front of the field?

On Friday in Abu Dhabi, it was McLaren who drew first blood as Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri ended the session in first and second place respectively.

The Woking-based squad is looking to secure its first constructors' title in 26 years with Ferrari its sole remaining challenger.

However, Ferrari has been dealt a mighty blow as Charles Leclerc will drop 10 places on the starting grid after fitting his third energy store of the campaign ahead of FP1.

At Red Bull, it was a difficult day for Max Verstappen. During the first practice session, the Dutchman was on the sidelines as Isack Hadjar stepped behind the wheel.

It means he only had two hours of practice to get up to speed, and in the second session of the weekend, Verstappen complained of understeer and a lack of grip behind the wheel.

The field was close together, but the four-time world champion conceded as much as a full second to Lando Norris.

Verstappen still hasn't taken a pole position since the Austrian Grand Prix, with Norris emerging as the early favourite to secure the final pole award of the season in Abu Dhabi.

Who is looking good for the race?

The weekend is also quite a significant one for Lewis Hamilton, who embarks on his final race event for Mercedes.

It would be an emotional moment if the partnership can end on a high - however strong on-track form has often not been the case this season for the seven-time world champion.

For Verstappen, it is hoped in the Red Bull camp that it can create a memorable turnaround like the one on display in Qatar.

Indeed, the data from the long runs are not very positive for Verstappen either, at least in terms of chances of victory. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were able to drive several laps in a row in the 1:29 range, with Piastri in particular impressing with a couple of low times in the 1:29s.

Hamilton also showed fine times, while Verstappen's speed tapered off during his stint - suggesting he is on the back foot. Ferrari too look to be in the mix, but the key question will be how far can Leclerc climb when his penalty is applied?
