F1 Canadian Grand Prix 2025

'Stupid' Lando Norris and Red Bull finger pointing leads to F1 'embarrassment' - International Media reacts

Press from around the globe have responded to Canadian Grand Prix that burst into life in the latter stages after Lando Norris struck the back of Oscar Piastri in a first case of McLaren friendly fire.

George Russell won the Canadian Grand Prix to seal the fourth victory of his F1 career, but it barely made headlines at all.

That was due to Lando Norris' disastrous collision with McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri, which prompted further controversy between Russell and Max Verstappen, a whole host of post-race investigations and a protest from Red Bull.

It also overshadowed Kimi Antonelli's first F1 podium as the paddock waited over five hours for the official result to be confirmed.

Here is how media from around the world reacted to the tenth round of the F1 season, the Canadian Grand Prix.

🇬🇧 The Times - 'Stupid' Norris collides with team-mate Piastri as Russell wins in Montreal

British broadsheet newspaper The Times focused on the the catalyst for all the late-race drama at the Canadian Grand Prix, which it highlighted was won by native son George Russell.

It was his compatriot, Lando Norris, who instigated the chaos at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

In particular, it addressed how the 25-year-old called his collision with Oscar Piastri "stupid", as he quickly took responsibility and apologised to McLaren and his team-mate.

🇳🇱 De Telegraaf - Red Bull accuses George Russell of unsportsmanlike conduct, but Mercedes driver retains victory in Canada

Dutch paper De Telegraaf tackled the fallout from Norris' crash, which subsequently bled into the post-race proceedings.

It highlighted Christian Horner's remarks on Sunday evening, comments that came soon after Red Bull had submitted a protest, on two fronts, aimed at Russell for what the Milton Keynes squad felt was gamesmanship, or "unsportsmanlike conduct" as mooted by the headline.

Despite the six-time constructors' champions arguing he deliberately tried to get Max Verstappen banned, the British driver ultimately kept the fourth win of his F1 career.

🇮🇹 La Gazetta dello Sport - Kimi in the footsteps of Italian legends: from Fisichella to Patrese, the drivers with the most podiums

Italian publication La Gazetta dello Sport celebrated Kimi Antonelli, the first F1 driver from the country to secure a podium in the championship since Jarno Trulli did at the 2009 Japanese Grand Prix for Toyota.

It took a close look at F1's Italian legends to commemorate the occasion, highlighting Giancarlo Fisichella and Riccardo Patrese in the headline.

It was an even-more noteworthy achievement for Antonelli, who also became the third-youngest podium finisher in the F1 history.

🇪🇸 El País - Norris commits hara-kiri at the Canadian GP

Spanish outlet El País also covered Norris' crash with Piastri, this time referring to it as "hara-kiri", after the ancient Japanese ritual.

It is death by suicide through disembowelment with a sword, something that was previously practiced by Samurai as an alternative to being disgraced or executed.

Whilst not quite what Norris did in Montreal, it is underlining how the McLaren driver's self-inflicted misery was entirely of his own doing.

🇩🇪 BILD - Formula 1 has embarrassed itself

German publication BILD took the championship to task for the lengthy delay in the official results being announced.

At almost five and-a-half hours since the chequered flag flew, it questioned what took the FIA stewards so long, arguing it was an unacceptable delay.

"Imagine going to a football match and the winner isn't decided until 5 hours and 20 minutes after the final whistle – and that's because of video evidence! Impossible? Not in Formula... This means that the majority of fans won't know until Monday morning whether Russell is truly the winner... A disgrace for Formula 1!," it read.

🇦🇺 Herald Sun - Lewis Hamilton 'devastated' after running over animal on track

Australian tabloid the Herald Sun addressed one of the more upsetting points of the weekend at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, after Lewis Hamilton ran over a groundhog during the race.

It caused significant, afternoon-ruining damage the underbody of his SF-25, and Ferrari driver was visibly affected by learning of the tragic accident.

Speaking after the race, the seven-time F1 drivers' champion said he was "devastated" by it.
