Sergio Perez has denied he is “overdelivering” at Cadillac, insisting his poor form at Red Bull was outside of his control.
Perez joined Red Bull in 2021 and spent several years alongside Max Verstappen before departing at the end of 2024.
His final season was filled with various struggles, and he often failed to get inside the top 10 to bring home points.
With Verstappen long established as Red Bull's lead driver, Perez struggled to adapt to the Dutchman's preferences, which steered the development direction at the team.
“I wasn't able to show my true potential, because of very different circumstances in the last six months at Red Bull,” Perez told media including RacingNews365.
“There were a lot of circumstances behind it.”
Perez has impressed this year at Cadillac alongside team-mate Valtteri Bottas, with the veteran duo steering the American squad's development during its maiden F1 campaign.
The Mexican has drawn praise for his performances, but asserted nothing has changed on a personal level since his days at Red Bull.
“People think that I'm overdelivering at the moment, but I was driving already at a very high level earlier, given the circumstances I was in,” he said.
“And there's no difference with this new generation of cars.
“I’m really happy with the level at the moment, with my pace, I’m really happy and I seem to be getting better and better.
“I just have to keep performing. That's the only thing that matters to me at the moment."
