Carlos Sainz set an impressive lap time to put himself at the top of the F1 timing board with two hours remaining in the afternoon session.

Sainz was one of only two drivers who did not hand the car over to their team-mate during the lunch break.

Lewis Hamilton held the fastest lap time after the morning, but Sainz was quick to displace him when he got back behind the wheel, setting a 1:29.348.

It placed him 0.031s ahead of the seven-time champion, while the second Ferrari of Charles Leclerc was third fastest with his best effort.

Leclerc also had a spin at the final corner as the track became a little slippery with a little rainfall impacting the track surface.

The Mercedes duo of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli were fifth and sixth, with Antonelli taking over duties from Russell in the afternoon.

The two-by-twos followed in sixth and seventh with Jack Doohan placing himself ahead of team-mate Pierre Gasly.

Fernando Alonso, Yuki Tsunoda and Lance Stroll rounded out the top 10.

Liam Lawson was sidelined for much of the opening session with a water leak issue but the team has since managed to solve the issue, with the New Zealander clocking in valuable mileage in the afternoon.
