Liam Lawson has been one of the standout performers in F1 this season, but his future is still not sewn up, and Red Bull has three strong candidates for the two Racing Bulls seats.
Neither Lawson nor team-mate Arvid Lindblad, who has also impressed in what is his rookie year, has been confirmed for the 2027 campaign, and with F2 title contender Nikola Tsolov waiting in the wings, the top brass at the joint Milton Keynes-Faenza team has a tough choice to make.
It is, of course, a good position to be in, but there is considerable speculation surrounding what decision might be made.
Lindblad is broadly expected to keep his drive, given his age and trajectory, with the likely call being made between Lawson and Tsolov.
Tsolov is just seven points behind Haas-bound Rafael Camara in the F2 drivers' standings, and will not be able to return to the series next term if he does win the crown.
However, he has little experience in an F1 car, and a year on the sidelines as Racing Bulls reserve driver may be the best course of action, F2 title or not.
Lawson, meanwhile, is well on his way to clinching 'best of the rest', sitting ninth in the F1 drivers' table as the highest-placed driver from outside the top four teams.
Whilst 14 of his 75 points have come for Red Bull, he has almost double the number of points of Alpine's Pierre Gasly in tenth.
As such, in a recent poll conducted by RacingNews365, over 70 per cent of respondents agreed that Lawson has done enough to earn his Racing Bulls seat for next year.
