Sainz 'cannot complain' about Alonso becoming top Spanish driver

Fernando Alonso has amassed almost double the amount of championship points achieved by Carlos Sainz so far in 2023, but Sainz is not worried about no longer being the lead Spanish driver in F1.

Carlos Sainz insists that he "cannot complain" about Fernando Alonso overtaking him to become the current leading Spanish driver in Formula 1. Alonso sits third in the World Championship standings on 93 points, having amassed almost double the amount of points achieved by sixth-placed Sainz. While Sainz has been the most successful driver from Spain in terms of the standings in recent years, he has now lost that mantle to Alonso, with Aston Martin performing more strongly than Ferrari during the opening stages of the 2023 F1 season. However, Sainz remains content with his current situation, despite the Scuderia's recent struggles.

Sainz 'living the dream'

When asked about how he had been affected by Alonso replacing him as Spain's top driver in F1, Sainz told media, including RacingNews365.com : "Not much really. "I cannot complain about life really. I'm a Ferrari driver living the dream. "Yes, it's been a tough start to the season and I'd much rather be fighting for poles and wins like we were last year rather than struggling like we are. "But we still have a chance at a podium pretty much every weekend, which is not that bad. I think I cannot complain about it."

'Nothing' can bother Sainz as a Ferrari driver

Sainz has praised the efforts of Ferrari to deliver their upgrade package much sooner than originally planned, and continues to enjoy racing for the team. "You cannot imagine the effort Maranello has [put in] in trying to bring this package forward," the Spaniard explained. "It was supposed to come a lot later in the season and the whole factory was just flat out these last few months, because of the situation, to try and bring it earlier. "When I go everyday back to Maranello, I see what's going on there and I wake up every morning and I realise that I'm a Ferrari driver, that I'm still having a chance for the podium and that life is good, then there's nothing really that can bother you. "It's a long season and also we'll see where everyone is in a couple of races or in the future."
