Lando Norris responds to salary speculation after McLaren F1 extension

Lando Norris has played down how much he is earning as part of his new contract with McLaren.

The reigning champion recently penned a new deal with the Woking-based squad, ensuring he will stay with the team until at least the end of the 2030 season.

Shortly after the deal was announced, it was speculated that Norris had pushed himself into the region of the money that is being earned by likes of F1 superstars Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

However, Norris has insisted that it is not the case.

“I mean, I feel I should earn as much as them, but it [his new contract] is certainly not close to the figures that I’ve been seeing online, sadly!” Norris said, as quoted by The Telegraph.

“Of course, it is a bit more [than the last deal], as it is with any job when you extend. 

“But it’s certainly not close to the level of Lewis or Max. Which, in a way, it shouldn’t be because I’ve not achieved as much as what they’ve achieved in their careers.”

Having established themselves as two of F1's most successful drivers, it is no surprise that Verstappen and Hamilton are the two highest earners on the grid, who are estimated to be earning in the region of $60-70 million per year.

Norris has set his sights on reaching such figures, believing that in his current form, he can beat them head-to-head.

“But in another way, I believe it should be, because I believe I can fight against them whenever I need to, and I can do a better job whenever I need to. So yeah, I guess I have two opinions on it,” he said.

“I’m working on it. I don’t know when my next extension or renewal will be, but hopefully I can try and match [them] one day. 

“But no, I dream of seeing those figures that I’ve seen online.”
