George Russell has explained the big off-track moment which nearly ended his Dutch Grand Prix early. The Mercedes driver was being chased by teammate Lewis Hamilton for seventh place, when the pair came over the hill at Turn 6 and he put the left-side wheels on the grass entering Turn 7. The rear of the W14 stepped out, causing him to slide sideways, before collecting it at the apex of Turn 7 with Hamilton directly behind.
Russell: I was struggling to see
Earlier in the race the Mercedes driver made contact attempt to pass Yuki Tsunoda at Turn 1 for position, which damaged his tyres. Russell believes this contributed to the scare, explaining how when speaking to media including RacingNews365 : "I made contact with Tsunoda about five laps before and I had massive vibrations," he said. "In the high speed [corners] I was struggling to see, looked a little bit my mirror, next thing I was off the track but kept it out of the wall." "It lasted for about five laps, and I lost three or four seconds of race time. "That was a shame because probably could have stayed ahead of Lewis, Lando [Norris] and [Pierre] Gasly who pitted later." Russell would go on to finish 17th and last following a late puncture after contact with Norris, while Hamilton was sixth.
