Room for improvement at Porsche – Wehrlein

Pascal Wehrlein believes Porsche can still improve further, despite the 29-year-old having enjoyed a positive start to Formula E Season 10.

Pascal Wehrlein has made a good start to the 2024 Formula E campaign, although he's recognised that Porsche still has "areas" where improvements can be made.

The German driver made the perfect start to Season 10 by comfortably winning the season-opener last month in Mexico City, in what was a confident and dominant display by the ex-Sauber driver.

Diriyah wasn't quite as good for Wehrlein, as a result of overtaking being so challenging. Due to energy management having not been required, the drivers were able to go almost flat-out for the entirety of the race, making overtaking impossible.

Wehrlein started sixth in the opening race of the Diriyah double-header but ended up finishing eighth. He ended the race with more energy than anybody else, with him having complained about the race not being long enough. Race distances have been an issue at each E-Prix in 2024, something the drivers are delivering the FIA feedback on.

In the second race on the outskirts of Riyadh, Wehrlein qualified in P10 but did well to progress to seventh. He was one of the only drivers to make multiple overtakes. Whilst he would've wanted more points in Diriyah, he does sit second in the Drivers' Championship ahead of the São Paulo E-Prix in just under three weeks.

Wehrlein does appear to have improved over one-lap compared to 2023, which certainly puts him in title contention, as his race pace remains impressive on the whole. He's been working hard ahead of Formula E's second trip to Brazil and is pleased with how the year has started.

Competition 'extremely close'

"It's been a good start to the season for me, but there are still areas where we can improve," said Wehrlein. "The break was a good time for a lot of training because a lot of races are coming up.

"I have been working in the simulator and also physically to get ready for São Paulo as the next race."

Whilst Antonio Felix da Costa is yet to score a point in 2024, Wehrlein's competitiveness is proof that Porsche yet again have one of the best packages on the grid. Hard work is still being conducted in Stuttgart, though, to make the car even stronger, according to Team Principal Florian Modlinger

"It’s motivation and validation," said Modlinger, in regard to Wehrlein's Mexico City victory. "However, even after this success, we’re still working hard to improve our overall package. Our rivals are doing the same.

"In Formula E, the competition between all the teams and drivers is extremely close and it’s often the track characteristics that determine success. The races in Mexico and Diriyah were confirmation for us that we’re competitive on these types of circuits and that we have a good overall package for the season.”
