Ralf Schumacher highlights Max Verstappen dilemma: 'Something has broken'

Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher believes Max Verstappen is facing a difficult decision over his future on the grid.

The four-time champion has endured a challenging opening half to the current F1 campaign, leading to speculation over his short-term future.

Verstappen has a contract in place until the end of the 2028 season, but it is believed there are performance clauses included in the deal that could allow him to leave early.

Should Verstappen opt to leave Red Bull, many have predicted it would have ramifications further down the grid.

Schumacher has pointed to Carlos Sainz's situation at Williams as an indicator that all might not be clear for Verstappen.

"I’m curious about Sainz,” Schumacher told Sky Deutschland. “He seems to have turned down an offer from Williams. 

“Does that have anything to do with the fact that Max Verstappen might be leaving Red Bull? Oscar Piastri has lost some of his status. Or is Sainz perhaps heading to Audi?"

"Things are in turmoil at Williams. The team made a huge mistake with the car. 

“James Vowles also apparently didn’t organise things well enough, now that he and his team were able to build a car from scratch for the first time under the new regulations. 

“There’s likely a lot of friction there as well."

While Verstappen staying at Red Bull appears to be the most likely scenario for the four-time champion, other options have been mentioned.

These include a switch to McLaren, where his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase will move to no later than 2028.

“Something has broken between Verstappen and Red Bull,” Schumacher added. 

“The ongoing discussion about his future eventually becomes exhausting for the team as well. 

“The team hasn’t delivered either. The car was particularly bad at the start of the season, although the update did help somewhat. But the car is very difficult to drive.

“On the one hand, Max feels comfortable at Red Bull. On the other hand, however, there’s McLaren, where Lando Norris can win with his car. 

“Max undoubtedly assumes that he’d be even better there himself. The question is whether Max has lost confidence that Red Bull can still turn things around, or whether this restructuring is simply taking too long for him."
